If the name Surfhenge® conjures no images or associations for you, you're probably a lot younger than most of us or just somehow, sadly, missed out on the funniest scene from the best rock mockumentary ever.

 

Even though Striper's mom had never seen This is Spinal Tap and didn't get the Stonehenge reference at all, she still laughed at the name, and that was good enough for us. Even good enough for retired lawyer Mr. Sürfenfreude to go to the effort of trademarking the darned thing, so now there's no turning back.

We owe a big thanks to Jim Doran and the Winchester Community Music School, where it all began with us playing classic rock together. Mr. Sürfenfreude kept inserting surf tunes into our usual Tom Petty, Who, and Small Faces setlist, until one night in 2019, while out at a Fathoms concert, Striper suggested starting a separate, all-surf band.

A new band would justify new gear plus regular trips to Surf Guitar 101 festivals, so Mr. Sürfenfreude was all in. We couldn't do it without our buddy Garrett "Stringer" Nagle on rhythm guitar (throwing in a few scorchin' solos just for fun) and thankfully, drummer Tuna McHugh could join us in the summertime, when he returned to New England from Savannah. Shout out to you, Tuna and Stringer, Surfhengers emeriti, for the many good times playing all over the Bay State and beyond! And thanks to our very talented bandmates who are keeping us rocking: Andy on drums, David on rhythm guitar, and Savvy Sunshine joining Striper on bass for that ultimate surf rumble and reverb.

One final note: We bid a fond farewell to Tammy Bahama, our mascot terrier (pictured in Hawaiian shirt below), who was great moral support in those early days working through all "the good, the bad, and the ugly" pieces of our repertoire!
